Thank you 2024 APA-WI Planners' Day at the Capitol

Thank you to all everyone that joined us for our 2024 Planners Day at the Capitol on Wednesday, February 21, 2024.

We had meetings with 15 legislators or their staff and held great discussions on housing, intergovernmental collaboration, and active transportation.

Residential and Commercial Real Estate Landscape in Greater Madison Update One key barrier to increasing our supply of workforce housing

Kurt Paulsen, professor of urban planning in the Department of Planning and Landscape Architecture at UW-Madison, and Craig Stanley, Founding Principal at Broadwing Advisors, were on the Greater Madison Chamber of Commerce Lunch(UP)date discussing the residential and commercial real estate landscape in Greater Madison.

Highlighting the great work planners do in Wisconsin APA-WI Videography Series

APA-WI is excited to share the 5th and final in a series of statewide video interviews highlighting the great work of planners across the state to elevate our profession and provide you with useful information about the impact planners make in Wisconsin. We believe this content will offer you an efficient way to learn from and connect with APA’s great people.

This month we feature Charlie Handy, County Planner and Community Development Manager with La Crosse County.

Charlie Handy is the County Planner and Community Development Manager with La Crosse County. Charlie has over 30 years of experience in both city and county planning. He has a B.S. Degree in Landscape Architecture from UW Madison with a strong background in construction, physical engineering and urban planning. Charlie also has significant experience with land conservation, farmland preservation. He feels his strong suit is his ability to encourage more reserved people to participate in public engagement. His main focus in planning is diversity, equity and respect.

Charlie started in the private sector as a landscape architect; moved into local government as a deputy planner for the City of Onalaska; then in the Natural Resource field as an urban conservation specialist and land conservation director. In 2002 he became the County Planner for La Crosse County. In 2022 he moved into the role of Community Development Manager for La Crosse County.

He grew up on a small farm in Tomah, Wisconsin. He and his wife Kristin have five adult children. His family has hosted six teenage international students over a period of more than 10 years while his children were growing up.
