Policy, Advocacy and Collaboration for Housing

Join us for a dynamic discussion on hot topics in housing. We will discuss current issues and possible solutions with housing advocates, a city official, and a local housing builder. We will use the information provided along with our own experience to work through scenarios using development and implementation policies with an emphasis on collaboration. You will walk away with a better understanding of the process, the issues, and innovative solutions related to the complex housing concerns facing many communities.

How to Work with the Media

Join us for an interactive workshop-style session focused on media relations and community communication. The workshop is centered on interacting with the media. Development projects, public projects and community initiatives can be in the spotlight in the media, and planners are asked to interact with the media in several ways. Sometimes the situation is with a "hostile" audience or over a controversial topic. Other times, there are positive things happening in our communities or we want to get the word out about something. Most planners have no training or background in talking to the media. This session will open with a short presentation on communication best practices and how to relay information. The session will continue with a series of communication and public relation scenarios based on planning situations. The scenarios will be posed to the audience for discussion, with a follow-up from the panel on their take and how they would respond or position themselves or the issue.

De Pere Historic Downtown & Cultural District Tour

De Pere is a well-regarded community with a high level of satisfaction among residents and visitors. It offers a quaint, small-town atmosphere, picturesque views of the Fox River, a walkable downtown, high quality yet affordable housing and great schools. The city has a goal of making itself a center for arts and culture in the area. To that end, the city continually strives to make downtown a destination that attracts more residents and visitors, has an increased vibrancy and vitality, is connected to the Fox River and is a walkable and unified district. The city will leverage the future Mulva Cultural Center to be a catalyst to further economic growth and emphasize the cultural arts. At the end of the de Pere tour you will visit the new Art Alley and be asked to participate in a downtown visitor/public engagement session for the West Downtown Vision Plan, which recently kicked off.

What better way to wrap up a development tour than with a stop at a brewery and taproom? The Zambadli Beer development is a redevelopment of a brownfield site in the Village of Allouez. The new development includes Zambaldi Brewery and Taproom, Gallagher's Pizza and Wisconsin Medical Credit Union. Total walking distance is 1.9 miles.
